Copper round bars, also sold as copper rods, appear in electrical contacts, earthing electrodes, welding tips, bearing and heat-sink components, forged parts and countless machined products. Because copper is soft and gummy to machine and highly sensitive to purity, choosing the right grade and finish is essential. This guide from a copper round bars manufacturer in India covers grades, standards, sizes, tolerances and machining practice.

What Are Copper Round Bars?

A copper round bar is a solid, circular-section product in straight lengths, made by extrusion or by cold drawing from extruded or continuously cast stock. Diameters range from a few millimetres to well over 100 mm. Bars may be supplied as extruded (hot-finished), cold-drawn and straightened, or peeled and turned for a bright, accurate surface.

Common Grades

GradeUNSCu contentSpecial features
Cu-ETPC1100099.90% minHighest practical conductivity; most electrical bar
Cu-OF (OFHC)C1020099.95% minVery low oxygen; vacuum, electronics, brazing in H2 atmospheres
Cu-DHPC1220099.90% minPhosphorus deoxidised; weldable and brazeable
Cu-FRHCIS grade99.90% minFire-refined high conductivity, Indian practice

If heavy machining is the priority rather than conductivity, specialty free-machining coppers such as tellurium copper (C14500) are used; they trade a little conductivity for much better chip breaking. Ask your supplier if this applies to your part.

Applicable Standards

  • ASTM B133: copper rod, bar and shapes
  • ASTM B187/B187M: copper bus bar, rod and shapes
  • ASTM B124: copper and copper alloy forging rod, bar and shapes
  • EN 13601: copper rod, bar and wire for electrical purposes
  • EN 12163: copper and copper alloy rod for general purposes
  • IS 613: copper rods and bars for electrical purposes

Sizes and Tolerances

Round bars are normally available in diameters from about 6 mm to 150 mm, with straight lengths of 3 m to 6 m and up to 12 m on request. Typical diametral tolerance classes include h9 and h11 for drawn bars and wider grades for extruded bars; roundness and straightness are also specified (for example, a maximum bow in mm per metre). For automatic lathes, request peeled or ground bar to tight tolerances; for forging or hot-working, as-extruded bar is usually sufficient.

How Copper Round Bars Are Made

  1. Melting and casting of LME-grade cathode into round billets.
  2. Heating and extrusion at roughly 800–900 °C through a die sized to the near-net diameter, with immediate water quench.
  3. Pickling to remove oxide and give a clean, bright surface.
  4. Cold drawing through dies for accurate diameter and the required temper (soft, half hard or hard).
  5. Annealing if a soft temper is specified, in protective atmosphere.
  6. Straightening, cutting and end finishing.
  7. Testing: chemistry, conductivity, hardness, tensile, bend and microstructure on a lot basis.

Machining Copper Round Bars

Copper work-hardens and tends to produce long, stringy chips and built-up edge. Best practice:

  • Use sharp, positive-rake carbide or HSS tools with polished chip faces.
  • Run higher surface speeds and light-to-moderate feed to keep chips flowing.
  • Use plenty of water-soluble coolant or cutting oil.
  • Use half-hard bar where possible; dead-soft bar smears and gums.
  • For high-volume turned parts, consider tellurium or sulphur coppers.

Typical Applications

  • Electrical: terminals, studs, contact pins, switchgear components, bus connectors
  • Earthing: solid copper earth rods and electrodes
  • Welding: electrode holders, spot-welding tips (alloy bars)
  • Thermal: heat sinks, furnace tuyeres, mould components
  • Forging: hot-forged valve and electrical components
  • Industrial: rolls, stamping dies, vacuum and cryogenic components (C10200)

Choosing between Copper and Brass Round Bars

Copper gives conductivity, but brass bars machine far faster and cost less per part. If conductivity above 85% IACS is not required, see our guide to brass round bars. For flat conductors, see copper flat bars.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between copper rod and copper round bar?

In practice the terms overlap. "Rod" often refers to smaller diameters or coiled products, while "bar" refers to straight, larger sections. Both are solid round products made to the same grades and standards.

Which copper grade should I choose for round bars?

Use C11000 for general electrical parts, C10200 where purity or hydrogen-atmosphere brazing is needed, and C12200 where welding or brazing is part of the fabrication process.

What diameters can you supply?

We supply a wide diameter range with custom sizes to order. Share your diameter, length, tolerance and quantity for confirmation.

Do you provide test certificates?

Yes. Each shipment includes a mill test certificate with chemical composition and mechanical properties, and third-party inspection can be arranged.
