Brass round bars manufacturer in India - free cutting brass C36000 and CW614N round bars for CNC turning
Brass Round Bars — manufactured and exported by Melta Alloys, Umbergaon, Gujarat.

Walk through any CNC turning shop and you will see brass round bars feeding automatic lathes: valve stems, gas fittings, electrical terminals, fasteners and sanitary parts. Brass is the benchmark for machinability, and the right alloy decides cycle time, tool life and scrap rate. This guide from a brass round bars manufacturer in India compares the grades, standards and tolerances you need to know.

What Are Brass Round Bars?

Brass round bars (also called brass rods) are solid copper-zinc alloy products made by hot extrusion and cold drawing. Most free-machining bars contain 2–3.5% lead, which breaks chips into short, easily cleared pieces and acts as an internal lubricant. Bars are supplied straight, in diameters from about 3 mm to 150 mm, in lengths of 3 m and 4 m or cut to order.

Standards

  • ASTM B16/B16M: free-cutting brass rod, bar and shapes for screw machines
  • ASTM B453: copper-zinc-lead alloy bar
  • ASTM B124: copper and copper alloy forging rod, bar and shapes
  • ASTM B21: Naval brass rod, bar and shapes
  • EN 12164: copper and copper alloy rod for free machining purposes
  • EN 12163: copper and copper alloy rod for general purposes
  • IS 319: free-cutting brass bars, rods and sections

Tolerances and Tempers

Drawn brass bars are supplied in tolerance classes such as h9 or h11 on diameter, with straightness (for example 1–2 mm per metre) specified in the standard. Typical tempers are half hard (H02), hard (H04) and soft (O60); half hard is the machining default because it offers a good balance of strength and chip control. Extruded bars have wider tolerances and are suited to hot forging.

Machining Brass Bars

  • Use sharp, uncoated or lightly coated carbide or HSS tools with zero or slightly negative rake.
  • High surface speeds (often 100–300 m/min or more with carbide) shorten cycle time.
  • Light coolant suffices; many shops run dry or with minimum quantity lubrication.
  • Chips are short and easy to recycle; keep chip streams clean and separate by alloy to maintain scrap value.
  • Lead-containing bars should be handled per local rules; lead-free brass has a lower machinability rating and needs more rigid setups.

How Brass Round Bars Are Made

  1. Cathode copper and prime zinc are melted with lead and other additions to specification.
  2. Cast billets are heated and extruded into round rod near final size.
  3. Rods are pickled and cold drawn to precise diameter and temper.
  4. Straightening and, where required, stress relief anneal.
  5. Cutting to length, end chamfer and inspection.
  6. Tests: spectrometer analysis, hardness, tensile, bend and dimensional checks.

Applications

  • Valve bodies, stems, nuts, bolts and fittings
  • Gas, plumbing and sanitary hardware
  • Electrical terminals, connectors and switchgear parts
  • Automotive and instrumentation components
  • Locks, hinges and decorative hardware
  • Forged and hot-stamped parts

Frequently Asked Questions

What is free-cutting brass?

Free-cutting brass such as C36000 contains about 3% lead, which makes chips break easily and gives the highest machinability of any copper alloy, with a rating of 100.

What is the difference between CW614N and CW617N?

CW614N (CuZn39Pb3) is optimised for machining, while CW617N (CuZn40Pb2) has a slightly lower lead content and better hot-forging performance.

Do you supply lead-free brass bars?

Lead-free or low-lead brass for potable water is available on request; mention the standard and approval required.

What diameter tolerance is available?

Drawn bars are available in h9 and h11 tolerance classes. Specify the class and straightness on your enquiry.
