Brass Plates & Sheets — manufactured and exported by Melta Alloys, Umbergaon, Gujarat.

Brass plates and sheets show up in places most people never see: condenser tubesheets in power stations, deck fittings on ships, bearing housings, electrical terminals, stamped hardware and architectural cladding. The right alloy and temper make fabrication easy and service life long. This guide from a brass plates manufacturer in India explains the grades, standards, thickness ranges and rolling process.

Brass Plate, Sheet and Strip

By convention, thicker rolled product is called plate, thinner product sheet and long coils strip. Our range covers heavy brass plates in typical thicknesses of about 3 mm to 50 mm and rolled brass sheets in lighter gauges, with custom sizes and cut-to-size supply. Plates are normally hot rolled and then milled or pickled, while sheets and strip are finished by cold rolling to give accurate thickness and surface.

Standards

  • ASTM B36/B36M: brass plate, sheet, strip and rolled bar
  • ASTM B19: cartridge brass sheet, strip, plate, bar and disks
  • ASTM B171: copper-alloy plate and sheet for pressure vessels, condensers and heat exchangers
  • ASTM B248: general requirements for wrought copper and copper-alloy plate, sheet and strip
  • EN 1652: copper and copper alloys: plate, sheet, strip and circles for general purposes
  • IS 410: cold rolled brass sheet, strip and foil

Tempers and Hardness

Brass plates and sheets are supplied in the as-hot-rolled condition, in annealed tempers such as O60 and O61 for forming, and cold rolled tempers from quarter hard (H01) through half hard (H02) to hard (H04) and spring tempers. Annealed temper maximises ductility for deep drawing; hard tempers increase strength and stiffness for stamped flat parts. State the temper and, where relevant, the required Rockwell hardness range.

How Brass Plates and Sheets Are Made

  1. Melting and alloying of copper and zinc, with tin, aluminium or inhibitor as required.
  2. Slab casting by direct-chill or semi-continuous casting.
  3. Scalping to remove surface defects.
  4. Hot rolling to plate or intermediate thickness at roughly 700–800 °C.
  5. Cold rolling and annealing to final gauge and temper.
  6. Pickling, levelling and cutting to size.
  7. Inspection: chemistry, mechanical properties, hardness, grain size, flatness and thickness.

Fabricating Brass Plates

Brass plates can be sawn, sheared, laser cut, waterjet cut, machined, formed, drilled and brazed. For laser cutting, specify low-residual-stress flat plates; for marine tubesheets, specify the heat-treatment condition and ultrasonic or visual inspection where required. Naval and Admiralty brass plates should be stress relieved after heavy forming or welding to avoid season cracking.

Applications of Brass Plates and Sheets

  • Marine: deck fittings, hull penetrations, seawater pump parts and tubesheets
  • Power and process: condenser and heat-exchanger tubesheets
  • Electrical: terminals, switchgear parts, contact plates
  • Engineering: bearing housings, wear plates, die components
  • Architectural and decorative: cladding, nameplates, engraving, doors and hardware
  • Radiators and HVAC: fins and header plates

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness of brass plate do you supply?

Heavy plates are typically 3–50 mm and rolled sheets are available in thinner gauges. Custom sizes and cut-to-size plates are available.

Which brass is used for condenser tubesheets?

Naval brass (C46400) and Admiralty brass (C44300) plates are the usual choices, usually to ASTM B171.

What is the best brass for deep drawing?

Cartridge brass C26000 in the annealed temper offers the best deep-drawing and cold-forming performance.

Can you cut brass plates to size?

Yes. Plates and sheets can be supplied cut to size with protective interleaving for export packing.
