From transformer shielding and electrical terminals to heat shields, chemical equipment and architectural roofing, flat-rolled copper solves problems that no other metal solves as elegantly. This guide from a copper plates and sheets manufacturer in India explains how plates and sheets differ, which grades and tempers to specify, how rolled copper is made, and where each product is used.

Plate, Sheet, Strip and Foil: What Is the Difference?

The terms are defined by thickness and width in the standards. As a rule of thumb, thicker flat products are plates (commonly 6 mm and above, with ASTM tables for exact limits), thinner flat-rolled products are sheets, long and narrow coiled products are strips, and very thin material is foil. Copper plates and sheets are supplied flat in cut lengths, while strip is supplied in coils. Our range covers heavy plates (typically 3 mm to 50 mm) and precision-rolled sheets (thinner gauges), and custom thicknesses are available.

Common Grades for Copper Plates and Sheets

GradeUNSFeaturesTypical applications
Cu-ETPC11000High conductivity (100% IACS), the standard electrical gradeBusbars, terminals, earthing plates, shielding
Cu-OFC10200Oxygen-free, very low oxygenVacuum and electronic components, brazed assemblies
Cu-DHPC12200Phosphorus-deoxidised, weldableHeat exchangers, tube sheets, chemical equipment, roofing
Cu-DLPC12000Lower phosphorus deoxidisedGeneral fabricated parts

Standards

  • ASTM B152/B152M: copper sheet, strip, plate and rolled bar
  • ASTM B248: general requirements for wrought copper and copper-alloy plate, sheet, strip and rolled bar
  • EN 1652: copper and copper alloys: plate, sheet, strip and circles for general purposes
  • EN 13599: copper plate, sheet and strip for electrical purposes
  • IS 1897: copper strip for electrical purposes

Tempers and Surface Finish

Copper plates and sheets are supplied in:

  1. Hot rolled and annealed (O25): from hot rolling; thick plates for fabrication.
  2. Soft annealed (O60): maximum formability for deep drawing, spinning and bending.
  3. Cold rolled tempers (H00 to H04): from eighth-hard to hard, for stiffness, stamping and machining.

Surface finish options include mill finish, pickled (bright), brushed and polished finish, with protective paper interleaving or film to prevent scratching. Specify surface requirements when the product is visible, such as architectural or decorative use.

How Copper Plates and Sheets Are Manufactured

  1. Melting and casting: LME-grade cathode is melted and cast into slabs or cakes with controlled oxygen or phosphorus content.
  2. Scalping: the surface of each slab is milled to remove casting skin and defects.
  3. Hot rolling: slabs are heated to roughly 850 °C and rolled to plate or coil intermediate thickness.
  4. Cold rolling: reversing mills reduce the material to final gauge, improving surface and dimensional tolerance, while work-hardening the metal.
  5. Annealing: bright or batch annealing softens the copper and sets the temper.
  6. Pickling and cleaning: removes oxide and gives a bright finish.
  7. Levelling, slitting and cutting: roller levellers deliver flat plates; shears cut to size.
  8. Inspection and testing: thickness, flatness, hardness, tensile, grain size and chemistry.

Typical Properties

  • Thermal conductivity of about 390 W/m·K and electrical conductivity of 100% IACS (C11000)
  • Excellent corrosion resistance in atmosphere, fresh water and many chemicals
  • Outstanding formability: can be bent, drawn, spun, stamped and embossed
  • Readily joined by brazing, soldering and, for C12200, welding
  • Antimicrobial surface and a distinctive patina when weathered

Applications of Copper Plates and Sheets

  • Electrical: busbar fabrication, terminals, transformer and switchgear components, earthing plates
  • Industrial: heat exchanger tube sheets, chemical process equipment, evaporators, heat shields
  • Metallurgical: furnace cooling plates, anodes and moulds
  • Building: roofing, cladding, flashing and architectural features
  • Marine and decorative: cladding, art, cookware, nameplates and engraving

Choosing the Right Thickness and Temper

Match thickness to the structural or current requirement, then select the temper for your forming process: soft temper for deep draws, quarter hard for bending and light forming, and half hard to hard for flat stampings and machined parts. State the tolerance class (normal or precision) and flatness requirement on your enquiry, especially for parts that will be laser cut or punched. For conductor strips and bars, see our copper flat bars guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness do copper plates and sheets come in?

Heavy plates are typically available from 3 mm to 50 mm, with thinner precision-rolled sheets for stamping, roofing and electrical use. Custom thicknesses and sizes are available.

Which copper grade is best for electrical plates?

Cu-ETP (C11000) is the standard for electrical plates, while oxygen-free C10200 is chosen for vacuum and brazed assemblies and C12200 for plates that will be welded or brazed.

What does temper mean for copper sheets?

Temper describes hardness and strength resulting from rolling and annealing, for example soft (O60), quarter hard (H01), half hard (H02) and hard (H04). It determines formability and stiffness.

Can you cut copper sheets to size?

Yes. Plates and sheets can be supplied as standard sizes or cut to your dimensions, with protective interleaving for export packing.
