Brass fittings join pipes, tubes and equipment in water, gas, air, oil and refrigerant systems. They are small parts with big consequences: a poor casting porosity or a wrongly specified alloy leads to leaks and callbacks. This guide from a brass fittings manufacturer in India explains how fittings are made, what grades and standards to demand and how to specify them for plumbing and industrial use.
| Alloy | EN / UNS | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| CuZn40Pb2 | CW617N / C37700 | The standard hot-forging brass for fittings |
| CuZn39Pb3 | CW614N / C38500 | Easy machining for bar-turned fittings |
| CuZn36Pb2As | CW602N | Dezincification-resistant (DZR) brass for aggressive waters |
| CuZn21Si3P | CW724R | Lead-free silicon brass for potable water |
| CuZn37 | CW508L | Cold-formed and press fittings |
DZR brass (with arsenic) and a duplex-annealed microstructure resist dezincification, which is the selective loss of zinc that leaves porous copper and eventually leaks. Specify DZR for hard, warm or chlorinated water.
| Thread | Standard | Region |
|---|---|---|
| BSP parallel (G) | ISO 228-1 / BS 2779 | Europe, India, Asia, Middle East |
| BSP taper (R) | ISO 7-1 / EN 10226 | Europe, India, Asia |
| NPT | ASME B1.20.1 | North America |
| Metric and compression | EN 1254-2 | Europe |
Other relevant standards include EN 1254 (copper and copper-alloy plumbing fittings), ASME B16.15 (cast copper-alloy threaded fittings), ASME B16.18 and B16.22 for solder-joint fittings, and ISO 6509 for the dezincification test.
For drinking water, many countries restrict lead content in wetted brass and require product approvals such as NSF/ANSI 61 or 372 (North America), WRAS (UK), ACS (France) or KIWA (Netherlands). Tell your supplier the destination market early so that the right alloy and documentation are used.
Fittings connect to brass pipes, brass tubes and copper pipework; see also our copper pipes guide.
Melta Alloys manufactures forged, compression and plumbing brass fittings at Umbergaon, Gujarat, with CNC turning centres, in-house spectrometer analysis and pressure testing, and exports to 20+ countries with a mill test certificate on every shipment. Hot-forging brass CW617N (CuZn40Pb2, C37700) is the standard grade; DZR brass CW602N is used where dezincification resistance is required.
DZR stands for dezincification resistant. It is an arsenic-bearing brass with a controlled microstructure that resists zinc leaching in aggressive water.
BSP parallel and taper and NPT threads are standard; other threads can be made to drawing.
Lead-free or low-lead alloys can be supplied on request for potable water markets; mention the standard and approval you need.
