Brass pipes are the traditional choice where threaded joints, good corrosion resistance and a smooth bore are needed together: hot-and-cold water plumbing, fuel and gas distribution, marine seawater lines and process piping. This guide from a brass pipes manufacturer in India explains the alloys, standards, sizing and fabrication details to specify the right product.

Brass Pipe vs Brass Tube

Brass pipe follows iron pipe size (IPS) dimensions so it can be threaded and connected with standard fittings, while brass tube is sized by outside diameter and wall thickness. Pipe walls are thicker, typically in regular and extra-strong series to ASTM B43, because thread cutting removes metal. If you need thin wall, specify tube (see our brass tubes guide); if you need threads, specify pipe.

Alloys Used for Brass Pipes

AlloyUNSCompositionWhy it is used
Red brassC2300085% Cu, 15% ZnBest corrosion resistance among brasses, ideal for hot water and plumbing; the alloy named in ASTM B43
Cartridge brassC2600070% Cu, 30% ZnStrong and formable; general fluid handling
Yellow brassC2720063% Cu, 37% ZnEconomical, strong
Naval brassC4640060% Cu, 39.25% Zn, 0.75% SnSeawater and marine service
Admiralty brassC4430071% Cu, 28% Zn, 1% SnCooling-water lines and exchangers

Red brass is rated highly because its high copper content resists dezincification and stress corrosion in potable water.

Standards

  • ASTM B43: seamless red brass pipe, standard sizes
  • ASTM B135: seamless brass tube (used for non-IPS pipe sizes)
  • ASTM B21: Naval brass rod, bar and shapes (reference for related marine components)
  • EN 12449 and EN 12451: seamless tubes for general purposes and heat exchangers
  • ASME B1.20.1 (NPT) and EN 10226-1 / ISO 7-1 (BSP taper) for pipe threads

Sizes

Brass pipe is normally supplied from 1/8 in NPS upwards, in regular and extra-strong walls, in random lengths of about 3 m to 6 m or cut to length. Larger pipe sizes and special walls can be made from extruded stock. Standard NPS pipe has an OD slightly larger than the nominal size, so quote NPS and schedule or the actual OD and wall.

How Seamless Brass Pipes Are Made

  1. Alloy melting and casting of billets with controlled zinc and tin levels.
  2. Hot extrusion into hollow shells.
  3. Cold drawing and sinking to the finished OD and wall, with intermediate annealing.
  4. Stress relief to avoid season cracking.
  5. Straightening, cutting and threading or beveling as ordered.
  6. Hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure testing, plus dimensional and visual inspection.

Threading, Joining and Pressure

  • Threading: NPT or BSP; use a thread sealant compatible with the fluid. Extra-strong pipe is preferred where threads reduce wall thickness.
  • Silver brazing or soldering: for sanitary and refrigerant-type connections.
  • Flanged joints: with brass or bronze flanges, where large-bore pipe is installed.
  • Pressure: working pressure depends on wall thickness, temperature and the allowable stress of the alloy and temper; designers normally apply ASME B31.1 or B31.9 allowable stresses and a safety factor.

Lead and Potable Water

For drinking water, regulations in many countries limit lead in wetted brass. Red brass pipe for potable use is available in low-lead or lead-free compositions; check the standard and approvals required in your destination market.

Applications

  • Hot and cold water plumbing and sanitary risers
  • Gas and fuel oil distribution (as permitted by local codes)
  • Marine seawater cooling, fire-main and ballast lines (Naval brass)
  • Compressed air and hydraulic service lines
  • Process piping in chemical, food and brewing plants
  • Heat exchanger headers and instrument piping

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best brass for plumbing pipes?

Red brass C23000 (85/15) is widely preferred for potable and hot water plumbing because of its excellent corrosion and dezincification resistance.

Can brass pipes be threaded?

Yes. Brass pipes in regular or extra-strong wall can be threaded NPT or BSP. Extra-strong walls leave more metal after threading.

Is Naval brass pipe suitable for seawater?

Naval brass (C46400) contains tin that improves seawater resistance and is used for marine pipes and fittings.

What lengths are available?

Standard random lengths of about 3–6 m are available; custom lengths up to 12 m can be supplied.
