Few materials match the long service life of a well-installed copper pipe. Whether the job is a hotel plumbing riser, a fire-sprinkler branch, a process line in a chemical plant or a solar thermal loop, copper pipes combine corrosion resistance, easy joining and decades of proven field performance. As a copper pipes manufacturer in India, we are often asked the same first question: what is the difference between a copper pipe and a copper tube? This guide answers it and covers the standards, grades, sizes and applications that matter when you buy.

Copper Pipe vs Copper Tube

The two words are often used interchangeably, but the standards treat them differently:

  • Copper pipe (ASTM B42, ASTM B302) follows the iron pipe size (IPS) system: a fixed nominal pipe size (NPS) with outside diameters that match steel pipe so that threaded and flanged connections are interchangeable.
  • Copper tube (ASTM B88, ASTM B280, EN 1057) is sized by actual or nominal outside diameter with thinner walls (Types K, L and M), and is normally joined by brazing, soldering or press fittings.

In everyday trade, "copper pipes" covers both. When you send an enquiry, quote the standard and either NPS and schedule (for B42 pipe) or OD and wall (for tube) so the quotation is exact.

Grades Used for Copper Pipes

C12200 (Cu-DHP) is the default pipe grade: a deoxidised copper with 99.9% minimum Cu and residual phosphorus that makes it weldable and brazeable without hydrogen embrittlement. C10200 (Cu-OF) is specified for high-purity or vacuum service, and C11000 (Cu-ETP) is common where electrical conductivity rather than joining is the priority. In potable water systems C12200 remains the most widely approved grade worldwide.

How Seamless Copper Pipes Are Made

Seamless copper pipes begin as cast billets that are heated, pierced and extruded into a hollow shell. The shell is then cold drawn through dies over a mandrel, annealed in a protective atmosphere, drawn to final size, straightened, cut to length and tested. Because the pipe is seamless it has uniform wall thickness and no weld defects, and it can be supplied hard drawn for rigid straight runs or annealed for bending. You can find the complete route in our guide to copper tubes manufacturing.

Pressure Rating and Wall Thickness

The working pressure of a copper pipe depends on wall thickness, OD, temperature and the allowable stress for the temper. Designers typically use the Barlow-type formula given in the standards, together with the allowable stress values in ASME B31.1 or B31.9 for the service temperature. Two practical points:

  1. Annealed pipe has a lower allowable stress than hard drawn pipe, and brazed joints in hard-drawn tube locally anneal the metal, so design pressure is governed by the annealed values at joints.
  2. Pressure capacity falls as temperature rises, so hot-water and steam-condensate lines need a thicker wall than cold-water lines of the same size.

Joining Copper Pipes

  • Brazing with BCuP filler for high-pressure, refrigerant and gas lines
  • Soft soldering (lead-free) for domestic hot and cold water
  • Press-fit and compression fittings for fast installation
  • Threaded or flanged connections for B42 IPS pipe
  • Welding (TIG or MIG) for large-diameter process piping in C12200

Applications of Copper Pipes

  • Potable water supply and hot-water recirculation in buildings
  • Fire sprinkler and hydrant branch lines where codes allow copper
  • Medical gas and compressed-air distribution
  • Fuel gas and LPG piping
  • Chilled water, hot water and condenser water headers
  • Solar thermal collectors and heat-pump circuits
  • Chemical, food, beverage and pharmaceutical process lines

Quality and Documentation

For export orders, request a mill test certificate with chemistry and mechanical properties, dimensional inspection reports, marking according to the standard, and clean, capped, export-grade packing. Third-party inspection (SGS, TUV, Bureau Veritas, Lloyd's and equivalents) can be arranged where a project requires it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are copper pipes and copper tubes the same thing?

Not strictly. Copper pipe (ASTM B42, B302) follows iron pipe sizes with matching ODs, while copper tube (ASTM B88, B280, EN 1057) is sized by outside diameter with thinner walls. Both are seamless and made from the same copper grades.

Which grade is used for copper plumbing pipes?

C12200 (Cu-DHP) is the standard grade for plumbing, gas and refrigeration because it can be brazed and soldered reliably and resists corrosion in potable water.

What lengths do you supply copper pipes in?

Straight hard drawn pipes are supplied in standard mill lengths or cut to your length, up to 12 m. Annealed pipe can be supplied in coils for flexible installation.

Can you supply copper pipes for export?

Yes. We export to 20+ countries with export-grade packing, mill test certificates and the necessary shipping documents.
