When engineers say "copper coils" they usually mean seamless copper tube supplied in coiled form, annealed to a soft temper so it can be bent, flared and routed on site or on a production line. The term also covers flat copper strip supplied in coils for electrical and fabrication use. This guide explains the main coil formats, how a copper coils manufacturer in India produces them, and how to specify the right coil for refrigeration, air conditioning, heat-exchanger and plumbing work.

What Are Copper Coils?

A copper coil is a continuous length of copper tube (or strip) wound into a compact, easy-to-ship package. Coiling lets suppliers deliver long, joint-free lengths, which reduces the number of brazed joints in a system and therefore the number of potential leak points. Soft copper coils are produced from C12200 (Cu-DHP) or C10200 (Cu-OF) tube, drawn to size and bright-annealed to the O60 (soft annealed) temper described in ASTM B280, ASTM B68 and ASTM B88.

Why Soft-Temper Coils?

Hard drawn (H58) copper tube is rigid and ideal for straight runs, but it cannot be bent without fittings. Annealed (O60) tube has a lower yield strength and high elongation, so a refrigerant installer can bend it around obstacles with a spring or lever bender and make a flared or brazed connection without cutting and joining many short pieces. The trade-offs to remember are lower pressure rating for a given wall thickness and more care needed to avoid kinking at small bend radii.

How Copper Coils Are Manufactured

  1. Melting and casting of cathode into C12200 or C10200 billets with controlled phosphorus or oxygen content.
  2. Extrusion of billets into hollow shells, followed by pickling to remove surface oxide.
  3. Multi-pass drawing on block or bench drawing lines to the final OD and wall thickness.
  4. Spooling or coiling of the drawn tube onto reels, pancake formers or level-winding machines.
  5. Bright annealing in a protective atmosphere furnace so that the coil leaves the oven soft, clean and bright, without scale.
  6. Internal cleaning and dehydration for ACR duty, followed by capping or plugging of the coil ends.
  7. Inspection and testing: OD and wall measurement, hardness and temper confirmation, flare or flattening checks and pressure testing.
  8. Packing in poly bags, cartons or wooden cases so the coil arrives free of moisture and surface damage.

Sizes, Tolerances and Tempers

Soft copper coils for ACR and plumbing commonly range from about 1/4 in (6.35 mm) up to 1-1/8 in (28.6 mm) OD, with wall thickness chosen for the working pressure and refrigerant. Larger OD tube is better supplied as straight hard-drawn lengths because it is difficult to coil. Dimensional tolerances for OD, wall and ovality are set by ASTM B280 and ASTM B88; custom sizes are available for OEM requirements.

Specification tip: state the refrigerant (for example R410A, R32 or R290), the design pressure, the OD and wall thickness, and whether the coil must be dehydrated and sealed. These four inputs drive the correct wall selection.

Applications of Copper Coils

  • Split and ducted air conditioners and heat pumps
  • Domestic and commercial refrigerators, cold rooms and display cases
  • Evaporator and condenser coils for chillers and industrial refrigeration
  • Solar water heater and geyser heating coils
  • LPG, fuel-gas and medical-gas branch lines (where permitted by local code)
  • Oil coolers and brazed heat exchangers

Quality Checks to Ask For

Reliable coil suppliers should provide a mill test certificate with chemical composition and temper, evidence of cleanliness for ACR grades, and consistent coil dimensions so that your decoiling and bending equipment runs without jams. Ask for the coil weight, inside and outside coil diameter and packing method in the quotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a copper coil and a copper tube?

A copper coil is simply copper tube supplied in a wound, annealed form. The tube itself follows the same standards (such as ASTM B280 or B88); coiling only changes the supply format and temper.

Which temper should I choose for copper coils?

Choose soft annealed O60 when the tube must be bent on site or on automatic bending machines. Choose hard drawn H58 for straight runs that need higher stiffness and pressure capacity.

Can copper coils be supplied dehydrated and capped?

Yes. ACR copper coils can be supplied cleaned, dehydrated and sealed at both ends to keep moisture and dirt out of the refrigerant circuit.

What is the minimum order quantity for copper coils?

MOQ depends on size and grade. Share your OD, wall thickness, quantity and destination, and our sales team will confirm availability and lead time.
